Early Years

Our Reception classrooms are very busy as all the children have now started school. Not only are they settling into school by learning to follow the rules, routines and expectations, they are also making lots of new friends and exploring and using the great indoor and outdoor learning environments. Thank you for sending in splash suits and wellies, the children are having a wonderful time using our water wall and mud kitchen.

We have enjoyed reading our Power of Reading book, The Everywhere Bear, and we are excited to see where he will go to each week. He might even end up at your house!! We have also had lots of fun with the syllables and rhythm in the book Tanka, Tanka, Skunk and have now just started another new book - Hickory Dickory Dog!

Each day we are spending time building on our phonological awareness. We are learning to recognise and know the phonemes and graphemes and then blend them together to make words e.g. sat, pat, pin. Please keep talking to the children about the graphemes on their book bag keyrings. Can they find some objects that start with the different phonemes?  Please also keep reading with your child and don’t forget to update Boom Reader! Reading with and sharing books with your child has a massive impact on their learning. Our expectation is that children will share a book 5 times a week at home and that this is then recorded on BoomReader.

In maths we are focussing on numbers 1 and 2 and learning to recognise quantities (subitising) without counting.  We are also enjoying exploring patterns and shapes.
