Year 2

Year 2 have had an exciting start to the term as we explored the story of ‘Traction Man’ by Mini Grey. This really captured the children’s imagination which inspired them to write descriptions of Traction Man as well as planning ideas and writing about a new adventure for Traction Man. Some of the illustrations in the book followed the Pop Art style and led to us finding out more about the work of Roy Lichtenstein. His use of primary colours, bold outlines and printing techniques gave us the idea of representing his methods through our own artwork based on the theme of Traction Man. We even added a moving mechanism to our pictures! In Maths, we have been learning number bonds, the place value of 2 digit numbers and how to use different methods to solve addition and subtraction problems. Our book for this half term is called ‘Winter Sleep’ by Sean Taylor and Alex Morss and explores the forest through the changing seasons. We will also learn about the animals that live in the forest, their habitat and what they like to eat. We have written questions about hibernation, explored vocabulary and during the next few weeks we will begin to plan and gather information for writing a non-chronological report.

Year 2 are currently enjoying an amazing Power of Reading text called The Lonely Beast. The big writing task will be a newspaper report about the arrival of the beast in the city! So the children have been working on writing questions, using quotations (including speech marks!) and descriptive writing. The children have had such fun interviewing the beast and creating a dance linked to the his journey under the sea! Ask your child  for a jellyfish dance performance!

In maths, the focus has been on multiplication and division, with a focus on the 2, 5 and 10 times tables. This has been taught so they understand multiplication as equal groups. If you would like to support this learning at home, please access the Times Tables Rock Stars challenge! Miss Hobday has also sent information about the White Rose One Minute Challenge app and this would also be very useful in supporting learning. Our new focus is statistics, which is data handing using tally charts, pictograms and block graphs.

In RE, children are learning about Islam and in Science the learning is focussed on the human body and basic needs for survival. We are very busy learning and enjoying every second!

White Rose have produced a 1-minute maths app which focuses on building number confidence and fluency.

This term Year 2 are sharing the book ‘The Bee who Spoke’ by Al MacCuish. Through this text we will be learning about the natural world of flowers and bees. The children will learn names for some wild and garden flowers as well as carrying out investigations to explore the ideal conditions for growing plants successfully. We will be researching how and where bees live and use these facts to write a non-chronological report. In DT, we hope to design and make a model of a bee from clay and our geography work will cover map skills as we explore the landmarks of Paris in France. We may even learn some French greetings! Our Maths will cover fractions, time and solving problems related to measurement as well as revisiting addition and subtraction problems. We will continue with our weekly times tables and related division fact challenges. Please support your child with their learning by listening to them read regularly at home.
